The Girls Have A Hold On Me
I hate to have to admit this but I rented Sex and the City 2 even though I hated the first movie and knew the second movie would be even worse. Why did I rent it when I knew it would be awful? Because it’s Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. Ok, so they aren’t quite who they once were and the premise has completely gone out the window but it’s still my girls. Only someone who has watched the show from the first episode until the finale know what I’m talking about.
So despite the fact I am a movie snob and normally would turn my nose up at a movie like this I must admit there are some delightful parts of watching these movies. For one, just seeing The Girls together makes me giddy, even if it’s not quite as it used to be. Also the movies are pure decadence and while in one way I think, ok c’mon…must we change outfits for every scene, it’s also a bit of a fantasy to watch.
What a miss more than anything is the neurotics of Carrie, the sassiness of Samantha, the boldness of Miranda and the innocence of Charlotte. I miss more than anything Carrie struggling with the world around her while trying to figure out exactly who she really is. Also the movies are much more gimmicky than the show ever was. The show would never actually show overgrown pubic hair or a “camel toe.”
But still I can’t help but watch and it’s bittersweet. These aren’t The Girls I spent 6 years watching and this isn’t the show that had me crying in the finale. So it is what it is, the movie was never going to be anything like the show. Maybe I’ll just go watch season one again and remember the good ol days.
