Pirate Radio

Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked)

The Basics: A fictional story that was originally titled The Ship That Rocked about a pirate radio station on a boat located in the North Sea which broadcast to the United Kingdom at a time when the Brittish government wanted nothing to do with rock and roll. It is packed full with an awesome cast including Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Nick Frost, Rys Ifans, Bill Nighy and Chris O’Dowd (whom I don’t think I knew before but I adored him).

The Good: Everyone cast is great. I have a deep love for Philip Seymour Hoffman, he is always beyond kick ass. I also love Rys Ifans, he’s great in everything as far as I can tell. The story was clever and funny but also very sweet. A very clever movie and I’m really surprised it didn’t do well.

The Bad: My only problem with the movie was there were so many interesting characters and you don’t get to know nearly enough about all of them. In fact, when they released the movie to the US they re-edited it cutting out a lot of the movie but initially it was much longer.

It didn’t do well because it’s British and it sounded like they failed to get the advice of an American focus group, which most likely would have been “shove in a love story that doesn’t belong.” Plus it had no ‘splodey things.

@Grant: Americans, they don’t know what’s good for them.
