Actually, I think sheltering and denying lead to problems like drug abuse and teen pregnancies, whereas confronting and discussing them may help to prevent it. A friend of mine lives in a rural SC area that has high rates of those things happening, and it seems to happen most with families that teach their kids that you can't get pregnant until you're married and keep their teens from watching PG movies because they object to the foul language. Drugs rule!
