State and Main showed up on television the other day and Manly Man mentioned he’d never seen it. I loved this movie when it came out and decided it was another movie I had to show him. It’s been like a decade since I saw this, in the theaters I think, so I thought I’d review it.
The Basics: A movie crew is trying to find a small town to do their movie but were already kicked out of New Hampshire (they never really say why but hint to the lead actor’s interest in young girls) so they show up in Vermont and take over the town. It’s basically making fun of the film industry and small towns.
The Good: The best part of this movie is William H. Macy, he’s just seriously fucking funny as the director but I also adored Philip Seymore Hoffman as the writer who has to alter the script because it’s called The Wind Mill and it turns out the town’s mill burned down in 1960. The rest of the cast is great too including Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Styles and Alec Baldwin. Wonderfully quirky movie with a fantastic cast.
The Bad: There was nothing I can really pin point that I didn’t like about the movie, it just worked for what it was and you have to be a fan of this type of movie. No action scenes, no blood and no guts.
