Slumdog Star

I’m trying to do more reviews, my dad insists that this is what my calling is, that and photography, neither which anyone wants to pay me for. Oh well, I went to the movies a couple Saturdays ago, I love going to the movies but I hate the seats. We decided it was time to finally see Slumdog Millionaire.

The Basics: It’s about a young guy from India who ends up on the India version of Who Wants to Be A Millionare but they accuse him of cheating since they assume a boy from the slums of India could never know all of the answers.

How did he do it?

A) He cheated
B) He’s lucky
C) He’s a genius
D) It is written

The Good: The film starts off with such powerful imagery of the slums beause no matter how bad you think they are, the visual is so shocking. First off Dev Patel who plays Jamal is just amazing, I couldn’t get enough of him in the movie. You just couldn’t help but cheer him on every step of the way. His chemistry with Latika (played by Freida Pinto) is palpable. There is one scene, I won’t give too much away, but it’s a brief moment but it gave me chills up and down my body and it was nothing more than a hug.

The Bad: This is a feel good movie, so it’s not necessarily realistic but I never minded that as I might with some other films because the realism of India itself and the characters felt so real that you were sucked in immedietly. I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying this film.

I liked this movie a lot. I didn’t love it though. I think the cinematography was spectacular, the acting was awesome (especially Dev) but I wouldn’t have said it was the movie of the year

I heard that it was just kind of cheesy and stupid. My wife was bored watching it.

No, I wouldn’t have either but I did love it, not at the level of American Beauty or anything of course.

Well, we all have our own individual taste.
