This is an…interesting movie. I’m not sure who could watch this and who couldn’t. The subject and storyline is disturbing and the artisticness of the cinematography isn’t for everyone. Zoo was a movie I came across by accident and I’m always one looking for anything that will make me think.
The Basics: It’s a documentary but it’s not quite a documentary. It’s an artistic film about a true story that is told by the voices of some of the actual people but played by actors in kind of a re-inaction I guess. It is about the video that you can find online of Mr. Hands (although I don’t recommend it, I’m still traumatized by it) who dies from having sex with a horse. When I first saw the video I obviously looked up about the story and there was nothing online about it, no idea who he was, it was all very hidden. Now his name and a lot of details about it are on Wikipedia. One thing I hadn’t known, he was professional guy who worked at a big company and had a son.
The Good: First I have to say that the cinematography is amazing but not for everyone. I thought the way it was shot was very artistic, almost like photography to me. Very interesting angles and lighting, very dark. It’s really not like anything you’ve seen before. The story is complex and is told from different sides including some of the people he was in a zoo group with online.
The Bad: Well it’s not really bad but it’s not a subject for everyone. I was provoked by the film in many ways. It made me think, was it animal cruelty or is it possible to call something animal cruelty that is something the animal did and not something that was done to it. I’m not sure but it certainly wasn’t a smart thing to do as obviously he died because of it. I also had trouble sleeping that night but I’m not sure why.
