Just ‘Once’

For whatever reason I never got around to reviewing the movie Once but while listening to the soundtrack the other day I decided it was time to do it.

The Basics: First you need to know it’s an Irish musical, but don’t let that throw you off. The music is amazing and is composed and performed by the actors in the movie Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová who play struggling musicians in Ireland. The characters who are titled “guy” and “girl” and it has a very natural feel to it, almost like a documentary.

The Good: The music is unbelievable and the song Falling Slowly won an academy award for Best Original Song and still tears at my heart when I listen to it. The chemistry between guy and girl is palpable and deeply moving. The story is beautiful but simple, the music adds so much to it and never breaks up the rhythm.

The Bad: It can be slow or at least Manly Man felt it was at times but I didn’t mind, I felt it just added to what the feeling of the story was trying to portray.
