Why are people stupid?

I got a double thing on my registry at Linens N’ Things that I needed to pick up there but decided since one of the purchases was a duplicate I would just return it and get a gift card or whatever. I went to a cashier and she obviously was a few crayons short of a box.

Me: I need to return this, because it ended up being a duplicate.
Cashier: Ok, well I can put this on the Mastercard.
Me: Well, I actually was thinking of exchanging it for something else.
Cashier: Right now?
Me: Probably not, can I just return it for now. Can I get credit?  Like a gift card?
Cashier: I’ll put it on the mastercard.
Me: I actually meant to get credit.

This happened over a few times until the manager came over who looked like Aileen Wuornos but more pissed off than a lesbian serial killer hooker.

Aileen: What’s the problem?
Me: I need to return this.
Aileen: You can’t, this person bought it.
Me: I know, from my registry but I need to return it because someone else already bought this.
Aileen: We can put it on the Mastercard.
Me: Ok, whatever :rolleyes: (I didn’t want to fight anymore)

Finally the nice manager or whomever comes over, with an actual smile and seems like she wants to actually help me.

Amy: So what is the problem?
Me: (explain it again)
Amy: Ok, well we can’t give you a refund but we can put it on a gift card.

    Seriously. I mean it was a gift, a gift from my registry. Why would I want to put it back on that person’s card? I didn’t even want anyone to know of the screwup of gifts, I didn’t want to look like an asshole. If they accidentally put it on her card and then took it off I will be livid.

    I never flip out in public, I get a really bad social anxiety in these situations and I’m surprised I lasted as long as I did without just leaving.

    I put in a complaint to LnT and also commended the woman who actually helped me. They are going to send my complaint and appreciation to the store, now I am not sure I can go back there. Good thing there is one near my work.

    This is also one of the deterants for me shopping for anything as well. Customer service sucks and always will. They don’t give a shit about you or your problems.

    Blue – Too true.

    Metalmom – Because it was in the store already and couldn’t fit it in my chair. The easiest way seemed to be to just return it right then and there.
