I Can’t Help But Wonder

Wandering along Amherst I saw a few homeless guys and I felt awful.  I mean, it’s so cold and how hard it has to be to have no one to go to for a warm meal or a place to sleep.

On my way into Newbury Comics a man asked me for some change and I could see the shame in his face of having to ask that.  He didn’t look what you’d expect a homeless person to look like as in he looked pretty clean shaven, his clothes looked clean and he was probably in his thirties.

I got to thinking what it was that brought him to panhandling.  I’ve grown to love watching the show Intervention despite how depressing 95% of the show is.  I am always hopeful the person will recover and 95% of the time they seem to.

So I gave him a dollar and felt guilty, because I pulled it out from in between a five and a ten.  Then again, maybe I’m only feeding his habit that got him there in the first place.  There is no way to know, unless you ask.  I wonder if anyone ever asks them.

I know. It’s really hard to know what to do.

I try to give to the Red Kettles each time I see them. Even though the money doesn’t directly go to the needy, I feel better that someone is being the middle man–if that makes sense.

I guess I don’t mind if I do give someone a buck whatever they do with it, because it is THEIRS at that point and they can spend it on hookers and blow for all I care….

ugh i forgot to verify my email and lost my comment (kicks herself)

I kinda think people do ask/accuse straight out. Some people are so harsh that way. I could never.
You didn’t have to give anything at all…so that was nice of you. I bet he gets turned away a lot too. It is sad.

Mr. Fab – It’s such an uncomfortable situation and I hate that I can’t help more.

TMP – I try to give to them too.

    Brenna – It is sad.
