When Does It Get Funny?

When I think of a real comedian I think of Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Ellen Degeneres and Steve Martin to only name a few. I’ve only seen a standup of Dane Cook once and was really surprised to not find it even slightly amusing considering so many people are obsessed with him.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve mentioned that I actually don’t like him and gotten the most horified look from some people. I can tell you exactly why I don’t like him: he doesn’t have any jokes, he just seems to yell a lot and he reminds me more of a drunk annoying frat guy than a stand-up comedian.

I thought I’d do a bit of research and wasn’t sure how much I would find. I mean from where I stand I figured I was one of the few who found him annoying and unfunny but apparently I am not at all alone. There is a site called Dane Cook Sucks; I don’t think that requires any further explaination.

As I dug a little deeper I found some interesting quotes about him:

“He’s been able to make it without going through the same process that a lot of comics go through, in terms of using the clubs and working their material out that way,” says Rosenfield. But, he adds, Cook is “kind of like Perrier water. It’s brilliantly bottled, but it’s still seltzer.”

“Where are the … jokes?” wrote Rolling Stone. “How can any comedian get this famous with no jokes?”

The problem with Dane Cook, which becomes really evident during Vicious Circle, is that hardly any of his material is really funny to begin with. Most of it revolves around banal observational humor having to do with relationships, bodily functions and what have you. — from Byron Crawford.com

To add to all of this I’ve read that he also has stolen jokes which is a big no no in the comedic world. I would think stealing a joke to comedians is like lypsincing to singers.

So I’ve said all I need to say about him and I feel cleansed. I feel good knowing I’m not the only one who hopes in 5 years he ends up working at McDonalds. Until he’s gone for good I’ll just enjoy some real comedians, with actual jokes

If you want to see an actual “performance” of his then you can see one here.

LOL I knew you didn’t like him but holy moly :what: to wish that someone loses their job and works a McDonalds is really harsh….

That Clip thingy is funny… :lmao: What he is saying doesn’t make since… but the actions and his movements were just like how he does it.

I watched Employee of the Month last week…. And I would rather have poked myself in the eye repeatedly. I HATE Jessica Simpson, and the fact that it just plain wasn’t funny…. But I was too damn lazy to change the channel….. I would stay away from that movie if I was ya!!!

I haven’t seen him at all. Despite your helpfully posted video, I’m not in any hurry to change my ignorance of the ways of the Dane Cook.

Dane Cook makes it for one reason. Girls think he is cute. The joke stealing is disgusting and not surprising.

I WILL say that I liked his character in “Waiting…” however, I contribute that to great writers and not Dane Cook himself.
