IT Genius

Did you know that I am the IT genius? Neither did I. Apparently I am some kind of genius when it comes to computers…well at least among my co-workers and my family. I know some of you might be laughing right now considering all the times I’ve emailed you for help because I crashed my blog or broke a plugin but to some I’m the shit.

  • Computer techniques I have taught people:
  • How to drag folders or documents
  • How to right click
  • The concept of shortcuts
  • The concept of folders
  • How to have several pages in Excel
  • How to add clipart
  • How to close a document by simply clicking the X
  • How to find a misplaced document
  • What Winzip is
  • How to add a picture to the background

It’s funny how it one world you’re this idiot and in another world you’re a genius.

    Hey Robin,
    Yes I definitely know what you mean. In my past jobs I was always answering the same dumb questions and helping everyone out and they’d always be calling me frantic when something wouldn’t print and then I’d turn the printer on and they thought I was some genius. Idiots. Anyways, at this job I try to hide my computer knowledge from everyone, so far so good. My life is so much easier, I actually get work done…. and I don’t get aggravated with dumb old people. I swear I don’t know why they’re even in the workforce. So useless.

    That’s pretty much how I got my current job in I.T. Way back in the Windows 3.0 days, when our office only had 2 PCs, I was the one who didn’t freak out & who knew how things worked. That, combined with my even more ancient dropping out from a Computer Science program in college, was enough for the boss to hire me as assistant to our IT guy. I’ve just learned what I’ve needed to know from there.

    I hate how every single person I know calls me up when they have a problem cause their computer broke, or they don’t know how to do something. One friend of mine just got a laptop and she bought a wireless router and all that for her house, she calls me up right away asking if i can come over and set it up cause she doesn’t know how to do it. She lives about 30 mins away from me so I asked well what happend and I found out shortly after that that she never even tried to do it first that it was still in the box. I got a lil upset and told her well try doing it firsit, it’s really not that hard just follow the instructions. Then call me if you can’t figure something out. Well guess what….she got it all on her own lol

    Heather B – Yeah I usually try to figure something out on my own and 8/10 I do (2/10 I make it worse). I hate when people don’t even try first. I’ll have you know I setup our new scanner/printer all by myself!

    I was the IT genius at my work, until a new lady started and totally stole my thunder. I send her evil vibes every now and again, but ultimately, I’m glad not to have to solve the same questions over and over again.

    Heather B – I have friends and family like that too. I’m their first point of call should they need *anything* remoately technical doing since I’m a computing undergrad, even if it’s to do with something I’ve no idea about. Example: How to set up a boiler timer for an indoor heating system. I mean, wtf? Try reading the instruction manual. It’s not like you generally need a degree to work those things. I don’t mind helping people out but there’s a point at which it’s taking the piss :banghead:
