Everybody Huuuuurts

Now it’s time to tell you how this popular but depressing REM song still continues to mock me at age 28. Sometimes I think I’m living some cheesy romantic comedy with all the musical elements that so keenly express the feeling of the moment in time

I was visiting my friend Dee at college (Miami University) my Sophomore year and another friend of ours joined us as well. I’m not going to get into the utter complication of the fact Dee was angry at our other friend for a recent betrayal and Dee’s roommate also kicked us out of their town house onto the street. Let’s just stick to the humor of this story, shall we?

So one night we go to hang out at Dee’s boyfriend’s dorm and bring along a 30 pack of beer. I got myself a couple bottles of Boone’s, that was a common drink of choice for me. Dee’s boyfriend brought another friend to hang out with us and that’s when it got interesting.

We played cards for a while and drank a lot. When everyone got to a nice drunk stage Dee started hooking up with her boyfriend and the other friend started hooking up with the other guy. I had a boyfriend at home so I decided to go out to the hallway.

When I went out to the hallway I realized I didn’t know my way around so I just sat down on the cold floor as the music continued to blare behind the closed doors. It wasn’t until “Everybody Hurts” started playing that I decided I had to go for a walk. If a drunk girl all alone laying on the cold dorm hallway floor while Everybody Hurt’s plays in the occupied rooms isn’t an after school special I don’t know what is.

I decided to sneak in and steal Dee’s college pass so I could get back into her dorm room and just go to sleep. I remember walking through the campus for a while and then suddenly realizing I didn’t know where I was. I quickly started getting frustrated and upset. I nearly just laid down on a bench to go to sleep but decided to keep going.

I ended up back at Dee’s boyfriend’s dorm and called up to them. When Dee and her boyfriend came to get me I started crying (mix of alcohol and frustration). They hugged me and apologized.

So that is what I think of when I hear that song.

Sigh… Your memory dredges up so many similar memories that make me both cringe and laugh at the same time. Ahh, alcohol, the great stupidifier 😀

:lmao: But they make great stories…at least the ones we’re willing to admit to.

It’s amazing how songs can bring back such vivid memories – almost as if you are reliving them all over again.

Definitely, smells can do that for me too.

    lol! :martini:

Sounds like something out of my college days, only I was the one hooking up with my boyfriend. My roommate, knowing my bf was going to be spending the night, decided to head to another dorm to party with some friends, and took one of her high school pals with her. The friend was visiting from another school and had no idea where she was going on our campus. Just when things were starting to get interesting in my dorm room, the phone rings and it’s my roomy’s pal outside some other dorm, drunk, having left the party for some strange reason and wanting to know where it was so she could go back.

Songs and smells do things like that to me as well.
