The Red Punch
It was my 2nd day of college and my Sophomore roommate (who was also in a sorority) decided to take my to my first “basement party.†If you don’t know what a basement party is it’s basically a bunch of people drinking shit beer in a unfurnished basement full of smoke and loud music.
The party was at the house simply called 112 (also known as the frat Sig Pi) and I was 18 years old. The only time I had gotten “drunk†before that was at age 17 during Passover because I drank too much of the Maneshevitz wine :duh:
When I got there I was offered the choice of Schlitz beer or the red punch. Since I’d been drinking beer casually for many years I figured I’d give the red punch a try. When I tasted it I didn’t think it was very strong so I figured I should probably drink as much as I could. Right?
Later on in the evening, after at least 2 or 3 cups, I was standing in a daze holding onto one of the cement poles in the basement. A girl asked me if I was drunk and I responded as most drunks respond: no. She asked if I could let go of the pole and when I did I fell to the floor.
At that point my roommate and some of her friends carried me back to the door and abandoned me at the front door. I had to do my best impersonation of a sober person to get by the person on duty at the front desk but I must say my impersonation got a lot better a couple years into college.
When I got to my room I realized the drunk feeling wasn’t so much fun anymore. I was starting to feel sick and really dizzy. As a girl just barely out of the nest I called my mother at 1am to tell her I didn’t feel well. Immediately she asked me if I was drunk and I responded with “I don’t know…†She then told me to get some sleep and hung up.
I wish I could say I learned something from this and made slightly smarter choices throughout college but I can’t :dunno:
