I didn’t realize how much I sigh throughout the day until a co-worker at my last job would ask me every time “are you ok?” and I’d reply “yeah, why?” She’d of course explain I just let out this huge sigh and she thought maybe something was wrong. I’m sure sometimes my sighs have something to do with frustration or annoyance but usually they really don’t mean anything but a release of built up energy or tension (normal for me).

So of course now I’m moderately paranoid about when I sigh that people will take it the wrong way but most of the time I still don’t really notice I do it. Just the other day I had a co-worker ask another co-worker if she was ok because she let out this big sigh.  I responded that it was me and I was fine, just sighing.

I do think sometimes I kind of forget to breathe right and that’s why I have to let out this huge sigh but that’s normal right? Anyway, back to work (((((sigh)))))

7 Thoughts on “Don’t take my sigh personally

  1. One of my colleagues at work sighs all the time and it is so annoying. But it’s really because it’s a sigh that says “Oh god, I am so overworked and life is so stressful” as opposed to just a regular sigh. And I can’t help thinking that we’re all stressed at the moment but we’re not all sighing that much.

Maybe she doesn’t realise she’s doing it and can’t help it. Maybe I shouldn’t be quite so hard on her.

  2. Chris – that’s exactly what I worry people think…I try to tone down my sighing as much as possible.

  3. I’m not a big sigher (at least I think) but it’s my facial expressions that get me in trouble. My husband gets so frustrated because he says he can tell what I’m thinking by looking at my face. I had a college professor end a class early because I was giving him “the look”. Aparently I have a very expressive face.

  4. Heather – uh oh…sounds like you are about as good of a liar as I am :D

You know I do that too!!! LOL My Dr. said it when I went in for tests one time… He asked me are you ok? I said yes why. That is when he told me that I kept sighing.

I didnt realize that is what I was doing but after my appointment I talked to my Mom and She does it too… I think it is just a thing that or I am not getting enough air or something… LOL

  6. Good post. Do you sigh everywhere, or just when you’re somewhere you’d rather not be,like work?

  7. That’s a good question…I think it happens mostly at work.
