Due to the free HBO at the moment I got to check out the brand spankin new HBO original series, mind you I abandoned HBO when Six Feet Under ended The new show Big Love, which I was eager to check out, is impressive to say the least.
The show stars Bill Paxton (remember him from Weird Science?) playing Bill Henrickson who has 3 wives and 3 families (7 children) and somehow tries to balance it all. Jeanne Tripplehorn is the first wife Barbara who is the “head of the household” and basically above the others as far as they are all concerned. Cloe Sevigny plays the second wife Nicki who had moved to the suburbs to help Bill and Barb with childcare but soon became his second wife. Ginnifer Goodwin plays the third wife Margene who worked for Bill initially and at 21 is now another addition to the family with 2 babies as well.
What kept rolling around in my head as I first began watching this is what man is insane enough to want emotionally and financially support 3 families? I mean one wife and kids is hard enough I would think. Bill has to handle three different wives with completely different needs. That means 36 periods a year, three anniversaries and three birthdays. What I don’t understand is what would posess a man to want to take this on? I guess that’s the intrigue of this show, everyone wants to understand polygamy.
HBO certainly knows how to make real quality television but I guess it’s easier when you have so few barriers to cross. When it comes to movies, television, music, etc. I’m just so thrilled to see something different and this is different. I may have to get HBO again…dammit.
