I can’t help but find it interesting how age differences change over the years. A 5 year old and a 15 year old is a big age difference while 35 year old and 45-year-old age difference is nothing in society. My boyfriend is 10 years older than me and most of the time I forget that while I’m reaching 30 he’s reaching 40. We both see life the same way and act about the same age. In fact he’s been told many times he looks like he’s in his late twenties. I think if he looked and acted like a guy in his late thirties I would never have been attracted to him in the first place.

Every once and a while we have a laugh over the decade of life experience he has over me. We were watching My Name is Earl and they started singing the theme song from Greatest American Hero when we both started singing along. He looked at me and said “you know that show?” and I responded with “yes, we used to sing that song in pre-school.” I find it exciting though, all the life he’s lived before me. I love the idea he was in punk bands while I was still in elementary school. I love the idea that when he bought his first house I was graduating high school.

So the age difference is an interesting part of our relationship, a quirk if you will, but it certainly doesn’t define us. In some ways I think he’s a lot younger than I am. He’s still got a little bit of a child-like view of the world, optimism you don’t find often in adults. He gets so excited over things that most adults take for granted, like finding a four-leaf clover or getting an Italian soda. All of this is definitely a big part of why I love him and why we are so good together. I think at 28 I bring out some of the adult in him and at 37 he brings out some of the missing child in me.

No wonder he makes such a wonderful father.
