Valentines Day is what you make of it

I didn’t always love Valentines Day, for a period of my life I downright hated it. For most of college I would put a Fuck Valentines Day poem on my door. I think though, I may have had a decent reason for it.

My first real Valentines Day was my sophomore year of high school because I had my first boyfriend. I showed up to school to find I think a balloon, teddy bear and a sweet card in locker. I felt so special and so loved.

The next year for Valentines Day he and I were already broken up but not quite done with each other either. I’ll just say he was playing mind games with me. He loved me one week and the next he was making out with another girl in the hallway. I come to school on the Valentines Day assuming I wouldn’t get anything but saw my locker was partially open. I suddenly felt so full of excitement only to open it and nothing was there. I burst into tears and a teacher took me aside to calm me down.

My senior year of high school I had a really wonderful boyfriend, a different one. He brought me long stem roses to school and bought me the Bed of Roses soundtrack because I loved the song “Independent Love Song”. After school we lay in each others arms for hours just listening to that one song on repeat.

In college my Valentines Days were disappointing to say the least. One of them I went spent at the Doctors getting tested after I had been dumped, luckily I was completely clean. Another my other single friend and me went to see Rocky Horror Picture Show for the fateful Vday. I think my junior year I actually broke up with a guy on Valentines Day after he gave me a claddagh ring because I just didn’t feel that way about him (although we ended up being on and off for several years).

I didn’t share a Valentines Day with a boyfriend for about 5 years, not until Erik. We fell in love on Valentines Day 3 years ago and everyday has been a Valentines Day since
